Consumer Alerts - Egg Prices

In response to news reports citing price increase of 20% due to the suspension of the import of eggs from Linggi Agriculture in May 2009 as well as stating egg prices expected to increase until July 2009, the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) conducted a price survey in end May and mid July to check on the prices of eggs.

As of CASE’s checks in July, the suspension of the import of eggs from Linggi Agriculture has already been lifted. However, CASE found that 17 samples or 27.43% of the eggs surveyed have increased in prices (all produced in Singapore), while 3 samples or 6.45% of the eggs surveyed had gone down in prices (2 samples produced from Malaysia, 1 sample produced from Singapore).

CASE also did an updated check on the egg prices in September. It was generally found that there was no price increase. Out of the 7 samples that are produced in Malaysia, 2 or 28.57% reflected a price decrease while out of the 55 samples that are produced in Singapore, 12 or 21.82% reflected a price decrease.

CASE has since written to 2 local egg suppliers, Seng Choon Egg Farm as well as Chew’s Egg Farm for an explanation for the increase in egg prices. Both suppliers have responded and explained that they did not raise the cost prices of the eggs; hence the cost price was not a factor that led to the increase in egg prices.

Please see the tables here for reference on the egg prices.

Note: For the survey, CASE collected a total of 62 samples. Out of these, 55 samples were eggs produced in Singapore while the other 7 samples were eggs produced in Malaysia. One sample refers to specifically 10 eggs sold in a pack. These 62 samples were collected from 6 supermarkets, and involved different egg varieties or egg with special ingredients.
