CASE advisory for purchase of tour packages at travel fairs

CASE has received complaints about tour agencies closing down suddenly after collecting partial or full payment from consumers at travel fairs. Such tours are often conducted many months down the road and consumers are often left in the lurch without any means of refund after the agencies ceased operations.

Common business tactics by such agencies usually involve using free gifts and huge discounts to attract consumers to pay in full upfront at the travel fair. We strongly urge consumers to only pay a small amount as a deposit and guarantee to the agency instead of making the full payment immediately.

Additionally, it is important to buy the necessary travel insurance directly from insurers to protect themselves and minimise any financial loss that could occur. The type and extent of coverage of the travel insurance differs according to the plan purchased and consumers should compare the various insurance plans carefully before making a decision.

Lastly, consumers should read and understand the full terms & conditions and the refund policy of the agreement signed. Remember to keep all proof of transactions such as receipts and make sure that any verbal agreements with the salesperson is put down in writing.

Consumers who have a dispute against a travel agency may approach the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) or CASE for further assistance.
